The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has convened another Extraordinary Summit on the political situations in the Republics of Guinea and Mali.

The Summit, which will be held in Accra, Ghana on November 7, 2021, is expected to address the military takeover of power in the two countries.

It comes weeks after the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government had held an Extraordinary Summit on September 16 on the political situations in the two ECOWAS member states.

After the summit, a high-level delegation was deployed to Guinea to convey the decisions of the Authority.

Another high-level delegation with the ECOWAS Mediator to Mali, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, also undertook a mission to Mali.

Considered one of the pillars of the African Economic Community, ECOWAS was set up to foster the ideal of collective self-sufficiency for its member states. 

Asides being a trading union that strives to create a single, large trading bloc through economic cooperation, ECOWAS considers and discuss disruptive political situations in member states with a view to ensuring return of normalcy which is critical to the region's economic prosperity.
