The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to organize regular training and medical checks for drivers to curb road crashes.

The Acting Corps Marshal, FRSC, Dauda Biu, gave the advice when he received the NARTO president, Mr. Yusuf Uthman, on Thursday in Abuja.

He said it was necessary for the drivers to be trained as most of the road crashes happened during the ember months.

According to him, most vehicles plying the roads do not operate with the required safety standards, which contributes to road crashes.

Biu said FRSC and NARTO were partners on road safety matters, hence the meeting to address critical issues.

He commended the association and its members for the good works done so far in ensuring sanity on the roads and urged them to do more.

The acting corps marshal stressed the need for the association to create opportunities to conduct health checks for its members.

He said drivers needed to go for regular medical check-ups in order to be healthy while traveling.

“Train your drivers, it is very important. Monitor them to make sure they are medically and physically fit before hitting the road, especially at night.

“As a driver, you must be healthy to be able to drive well. A good driver must be physically and mentally healthy,” he said.

Biu also encouraged the association to install tracking devices on their vehicles for proper monitoring to curb crashes.

Earlier, Uthman said the association was seeking more collaboration with the FRSC to ensure zero fatality during the ember months.

He said he had taken note of all that was discussed and would ensure that the FRSC mandate of ensuring the safety of lives and property was adhered to.
