Former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase has lent his voice to increasing calls for community policing, stressing that insecurity can only be dealt with when people are carried along.

Arase made the comments on Wednesday while speaking at a conference in commemoration of the 2021 International Day of Parliamentarism with the theme: Role of the Parliament in improving National Security.

According to him, security is a critical component that should be people-inclusive in order to ensure and safeguard national development.

While frowning at the weak state of the nation’s security outfits especially the military, Arase stressed the need for concerted efforts with a view to strengthening the nation’s security architecture.

“Security outfits should be equipped as the world is currently moving into ICT security. In order for this to happen, the legislature has a huge role to play. I would suggest the imposition of cameras in hotels and many public places as the private sector should be very much involved in securing the nation.”

He also emphasized the need for law enforcement agency’s to be more civil, respect the rights of citizens, as well as exercise discretion in handling cases to avoid media trials.
