The Enugu State Chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities has called for a disability desk to be set up in the state’s Government House.

The state Chairman of the association, Mr. Onyebuchi Mba, made the call in Enugu on Thursday during the celebration of the 2022 International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Mba said that the delay in domesticating the national disability law in the state was not only frustrating but discouraging the disability community from self-discovery and self-reliance.

He called on the State House of Assembly to consider the global practice in disability matters and domesticate it before the end of the present administration.

Mba, however, expressed delight that the law had gone through a public hearing.

He also thanked the State Government for its support of their welfare.

He cited the employment of at least 50 graduates with disability and scholarship awards to 18 visually-impaired undergraduates.

Mba said that creating the desk in the Governor’s Office would help to avail the direct link to the governor.

“Persons with a disability should be appointed to oversee the office and other political positions to allow a good number of our members to benefit.

“We equally appeal for the provision of a functional permanent office complex or, in the alternative, an office apartment with the requisite office equipment.

“We also request mobility that will enable us to go about our activities without stress,” Mba said.

He further appealed to the governor to approve monthly subventions for the group to enable it to carry out its programs.

He said that the gesture would help them to depend less on begging for alms from the public.
