The Police in Lagos State have dragged a 20-year-old woman, Ebere Machi, before an Ojo Magistrate’s Court for allegedly damaging a fence and stealing food crops and other items.

The defendant is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on willful damage to property, stealing, and causing a breach of peace.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Dr. Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offense on April 20 at Igbede in Ajangbadi, Ojo area of the state.

Uche alleged that the defendant destroyed the perimeter fencing of land belonging to the complainant, one Chukwuemeka Okoli, and stole several items, also belonging to the complainant.

He said that the fence was valued at N40,000.

The prosecutor said that the defendant stole10 bunches of plantain worth N50,000, cassava tubers valued at N50,000, and three bunches of bananas at N15,000 as well as some fruits and Avocado pears worth N30,000 and N45,000 respectively,

Other items allegedly stolen by the defendant include sharp sand (N20,000), 10 bags of cement (N49,000) concrete blocks (N35,000) bamboo sticks (N10,000), iron rods (N65,000), and planks (N50,000) also stolen by the defendant.

Uche further alleged that the defendant conducted herself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the public peace in the process.

He said the offenses contravene the provision of sections 168, 287, and 338 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The Magistrate, Mr. L.J.K Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with one surety in like sum

He adjourned the case until May 17 for trial.
