The Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa weekend vehemently condemned the appalling incident that unfolded in Ekpoma, Edo State, where a team of police officers ran over a handcuffed man with their official vehicle.

The act according to Mr. John Mayaki, Country Director, Coalition for Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa said the brutality is a flagrant violation of human rights and a gross abuse of power, which demands swift and decisive action to ensure justice is served.

 

"The video footage that circulated online, capturing the horrifying incident, has shocked and deeply saddened us. It is distressing to witness law enforcement officers, who are entrusted with the duty to protect and serve the public, perpetrate such acts of violence against a defenseless individual in their custody. This incident not only undermines public trust in law enforcement but also underscores the urgent need for comprehensive police reform in Nigeria.

 

"We call on the authorities, particularly the Edo State Police Command and the Nigerian Government, to launch a thorough and impartial investigation into this incident. The officers responsible must be held fully accountable for their actions, and if found guilty, they should face appropriate legal consequences. Justice must be served for the victim, and their rights must be upheld.

 

"Furthermore, this incident highlights the pressing need for systemic changes within the Nigerian police force. It is crucial to address the pervasive issue of police brutality and misconduct through comprehensive reforms that prioritize human rights, accountability, and transparency. Training programs should be strengthened to emphasize de-escalation techniques, respect for the rule of law, and the protection of citizens' rights. Additionally, effective oversight mechanisms must be established to prevent future abuses of power and ensure that law enforcement agencies operate within the confines of the law.

 

Mayaki in a press statement in Abuja said, "We extend our deepest sympathies to the victim and their family, who have undoubtedly suffered immense physical and emotional trauma as a result of this horrific incident. Our thoughts are also with the community of Ekpoma and the Nigerian citizens who have been affected by similar acts of violence and misconduct. We stand in solidarity with them, as they demand justice, accountability, and a more just and equitable society.

 

"It is imperative that civil society organizations, community leaders, and government authorities work together to create lasting change. We must strive for a society where every citizen feels safe, where law enforcement officers respect the dignity and rights of all individuals, and where justice is served without prejudice.
