House of Representatives raises concern over the frequent collapse of the Electricity National Grid ...Demands a probe

The National Assembly have raised serious concerns about the frequent collapse of the electricity national grid and the adverse effects it has on the economy, the manufacturing sector, and the overall standard of living of Nigerians especially in the face of increased cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) arising from the removal of fuel subsidy.

In a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Honourable member representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode federal constituency, Edo State at the House of Representatives, Chief Billy Adesuwa Osawaru during plenary, prayed the House to mandate the Committee on Power to investigate and proffer solutions to the problem.

The Benin Chief and Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Poverty Alleviation raised concerns about the frequent collapse of the National grid and observed that this has negatively impacted the economy, increased operational costs of industries, who in the place of public power supply now seek alternative sources of power, reduced industrial outputs and the negative effect on end users who are made to pay exorbitant prices for alternate power and also for goods and services.

He prayed the House to mandate the House Committee on Power to urgently investigate the frequent collapse of the National grid and proffer solutions for the benefit of Nigerians as the economic downturn has worsened their living standard.

Within the last few months, the National grid has been faced with frequent collapse. In the first week of February 2024, the National grid collapsed to zero megawatts throwing major cities in the Nation into total darkness.

It is hoped that with the intervention of the Members of the House of Representatives, through the brilliant motion by Hon. Chief Dr. Billy Osawaru, the mystery behind these collapses will be unraveled with solutions proffered.
