The Defense Headquarters has appealed to the general public to exercise caution with regards to information being spread about the viral case of Seaman Abbas Haruna, allegedly detained for six years by a senior army officer identified as Brig. Gen. S Adamu.
"The social media has been awash with the pictures of a serving senior officer, Brigadier General M.S Adamu, alleged to be connected to the case of Seaman Abbas Haruna. For the records, Brigadier General M.S Adamu, whose pictures are being used, is in no way connected to the case of Seaman Abbas", a statement signed by Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defense Information, said.
"The Defence Headquarters wishes to seize this opportunity to call on the general public to allow the committee set up by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, to conclude its findings without prejudice to public opinion.
"Defence Headquarters appeal to the public to restrain from comments that are particularly false and capable of infringing on the fundamental human rights and privacy of the senior officer. The senior officer has the right to seek for legal action against any person or organisation that posts his picture(s) in connection with Seaman Abbas case.
"The military authority continues to assure Nigerians of its total commitment to the rule of law. We will do everything possible to get to the bottom of the case, and the public will be duly notified about the outcome", the statement assured.
