Late Sen. Ibrahim Nasiru Mantu

Sen Ibrahim Nasiru Mantu, Nigeria's Deputy Senate President, between 2001 and 2007, is dead.

A family source, who confirmed the demise to Daily Trust, said he died at a private hospital in Abuja after nine days of sickness and isolation.

He said the late politician died around 2am on Tuesday.

“He fell ill about nine days ago and was receiving treatment at home but he was rushed to the hospital when there was no sign of improvement,” the source said adding that the funeral prayer would hold later on Tuesday, in Abuja.

Mantu was one of the notable figures in the nation’s political landscape for many years.

In 2001 he was elected Deputy Senate President under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a position he held till 2007 when he did not return to the senate.

Mantu, who hails from Gindiri District in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, worked in various establishments before joining politics.

The late former deputy Senate President will be buried at 2pm today.

Mantu, who hailed from Gindiri, in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, was an influential political figure in Nigeria for several years.

Born on February 16, 1947, the late politician began his political career with the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN).

During the aborted Third Republic, he vied for the Chairmanship of the National Republican Convention (NRC), one of the two registered political parties. During the Late General Sani Abacha transition programme, Mantu was a chieftain of the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP).

In the build up to the present democratic dispensation, Mantu joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on which platform he won election to represent Plateau Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly in 1999. He served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information before emerging as the Deputy Senate President in 2001.
