The Number of people rescued alive from the collapsed 21-storey building in Ikoyi has increased to 15, with 42 deaths recorded, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu disclosed on Saturday.

The Governor while giving an update on the search and rescue operation at the scene on Saturday, November 6, 2021, said additional six people were evacuated alive from the collapsed structure and are currently being treated at the Police Hospital in Falomo, Ikoyi.

With this, the Governor said, the number of people rescued alive from the collapsed 21-storey building has increased to 15, according to a statement.

The statement titled ‘Sanwo-Olu names six more survivors in Ikoyi building collapse, raises number of those resucued to 15 …42 bodies recovered from rubbles so far,' identified the recently rescued persons include a 38-year-old woman Glory Samsom, Ndajor Ahmed, Yunusa Abubaka, Ajiboye Habib, Jeremiah Samson, and a man identified as Emem.

It said “the additional six people were evacuated alive from the collapsed structure” without stating the exact day they were rescued.

The statement added that the survivors are presently being treated at the Police Hospital in Falomo, Ikoyi.

Meanwhile, the search and rescue operation are ongoing at the site, while the heaps of rubble has receded sharply. 

The cause of the building collapse is unknown, but building collapses are tragically common in Africa’s most populous country, where millions live in dilapidated properties and construction standards are routinely ignored.

The Lagos State Governor who visited the scene on Wednesday afternoon said there were obvious violations and “mistakes from all angles” in the tragedy.

He has set up a Panel of Inquiry into the incident and promised that those found culpable after investigations by the panel, will be punished.
