Many students have been reportedly killed, while several others were injured in a ghastly automobile accident involving a truck at Ogunusi Road, Grammar School Bus-Stop, in the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos.
The fatally unfortunate incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon around 2pm, when students had closed from school for the day.
Eye witness accounts say the truck seemingly lost control and ran into a group of students returning from school, allegedly killing a large number of them and leaving many others with varying degrees of injuries.
As at press time, the exact number of casualties couldn't be ascertained but witnesses say the figure could be between 10 to 20 students that died. In the pandemonium that ensued after the crash, the driver sped off from the scene to avoid being lynched by an angry mob, but was apprehended by security operatives around the Excellence Hotel in Ogba.
Reports say that, as reprisal, students and irate youths took to the streets, destroying property, stoning vehicles belonging to the police and other vehicles in sight.
According to a release by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), it read that, "The Agency received a distress call at 2:56 pm about a truck accident at Ogunusi Road, Grammar School Bus-stop, Ojodu Berger. However, the information gathered from LASTMA and NPF Officials at the scene revealed that an unidentified truck lost control and rammed into students returning from School.
"The incident led to severe injuries to some victims, others were discovered dead.
"This unfortunate incident provoked some bystanders into taking laws into their hand by lynching of NPF, LASTMA Officials and other first responders at the scene, destroying vehicles and other properties.
"The number of fatalities and casualties could not be ascertained as at the time of reporting. The attack by the miscreants led the Emergency Team to head back to base as the scene was insecure and unsafe for rescue and recovery operations," the report read.
