CBO urges FG to create Youth, Peace, Security intervention fund

The Federal Government has been called upon to create Youth, Peace, and Security intervention Fund (CYPSF) in order to create increased participation, engagement of youths in peacebuilding, and conflict management processes at all levels in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2250.

They have also been called upon to establish and strengthen Institutional arrangements for effective coordination and mobilization of stakeholders to support the development of the process of State Action Plan on Youth, Peace, and Security.

This appeal was made by Mallam Umar Farouk in a Press Conference jointly organized by Grassroots Youth Coalition on Peace and Security In collaboration with Technoworld Community Foundation & Centre for Peace, Democracy and Development (UMASS) Boston at the International Press Center, Abuja recently.

This action he said would provide a predictable source of finance for the implementation of the Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) Nigeria Programme.

These institutional arrangements he explained would fast-track the process of domestication and implementation of Resolution 2250 at all levels in Nigeria.

"Resolution 2250 is the first UN Security Council(UNSC) thematic resolution dealing comprehensively with youth in issues related to peace and security."

"The title of the resolution is "maintenance of International Peace and Security" which is a reference to Chapter 7 Article 39 in the UN Charter."

The Resolutions under chapter 7 he explained further are binding on members States.

According to him, it would strengthen Nigerian Inter-religious Council (NIREC) to promote human values and non-violence resolution of infra and inter-religious conflicts at all levels.

He added "It is urgent to shift from reactive to the proactive and anticipatory response. It is essential to step up preventive approaches that can enable holistic and integrated solutions in addressing the insecurity challenges in Nigeria.

Resolution 2250 responds to wider socio-economic, cultural, and political barriers that youth face in their quest of becoming active agents of positive change, peacebuilding, and reconciliation; provide youth the opportunity to actively get involved in healing local communities as both victims of abuse and actors in reconstruction. "
