The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya, says efforts are underway to provide additional accommodations to officers and soldiers in army formations across the country.
Yahaya disclosed this on Monday at his operational visit and inauguration of projects at Headquarters 6 Division, Nigeria Army, Port Harcourt. Rivers.
The projects inaugurated by the COAS were the Regimented Sergeant Major (RSM) accommodation; Medical Reception Station and Damisa Heroes Club/Standby Hall.
Others were the renovated 29 Battalion Quarter Guard and reconstructed 29 Battalion MT Yard/Pol Point.
Yahaya said that several other projects at different stages of completion and those completed were part of efforts to boost the welfare and morale of personnel.
“So, the several projects inaugurated today are part of efforts to improve the administration and welfare of troops, which is one of the cardinal pillars of my mission.
“On assumption of office, I said that all RSM from the division to battalion level would be provided with good accommodation as well as mobility.
“This is because RSMs are fathers of their units, and as such, deserve some respect and recognition,” he said.
The army chief pledged commitment to addressing issues bordering on welfare to boost the morale of officers and soldiers engaged in several internal security operations in the country.
“Aside from this, I also visited 6 Division to interact with troops and extend my appreciation to them for their conduct in carrying out their assigned duties.
“I’ve been to other divisions, and I am still going round with the understanding that the most effective way of passing information and directive to troops is through physical interaction.
“So, we are here to commend troops for carrying out their assigned duties, and also to encourage them to do more to safeguard the country,” he added.
Yahaya said that the 2023 elections were fast approaching, and as such, personnel has a role to play to ensure peace and security of the country.
