FG assures envoys that Twitter will be back in Nigeria, but gives condition
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama

The Federal Government of Nigeria has had a meeting with some foreign envoys over the recent suspension of Twitter's operations in Nigeria.

They also used the opportunity of the meeting to convey the condition for the lifting of the indefinite suspension.

The Nigeria Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama who disclosed this to newsmen during the meeting noted that Twitter’s operations in Nigeria will be restored only if the platform can be used “responsibly.”

He further noted that the Federal Government never said Twitter is threatening the country adding that the suspension of the platform was a measure taken to stop it from being used to destabilize the country.

Onyeama, however, noted that there is no definite timeline for lifting the ban.

“We are not saying that Twitter is threatening the country or any such thing. Why we have taken this measure is to stop them to be used as platforms for destabilization and facilitation of criminality or encouragement of criminalities,” he said.

The meeting was held at the instance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Several countries had issued statements communicating their position on the ban.
