Senate commences screening of Lauretta Onochie, others as INEC commissioners
President Buhari's Aide, Lauretta Onochie

Eight months after President Muhammadu Buhari sent the list of nominees for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Nigerian Senate President Ahmad Lawan, on Wednesday, asked the Committee on INEC to commence their screening.

This  list which had the name of President Buhari's aide, Laurettea Onochie and and five other nominees generated controversy with many Senators and Nigerians not favorably disposed to having an aide of the President as an INEC commissioner.

Other names on the list are Prof. Kunle Ajayi (Ekiti), Saidu Ahmad (Jigawa), Prof. Muhammad Kallah (Katsina), Dr Baba Bila (North-East) and Prof Sani Adam (North- Central).

The Senate INEC panel, which has Senator Kabiru Gaya as Chairman, has a month to conclude the screening and report back to the red chamber at plenary.
