Edo Election Will Be Free, Fair, Credible -- INEC Chairman

The National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mammud Yakubu, has promised to deliver a fair, free and credible election in Edo State come September 21st, this year.

Yakubu made this promise on Thursday while briefing journalists after the inspection of the state INEC headquarters in Benin City which was recently ravaged by heavy flood that caused severe damage to election materials.

He further said that having organised a free, fair and credible election in the previous elections in Edo State, the up-coming election will also be completely devoid of malpractices in order to have election results that will be acceptable to Edo people and the general public.

Yakubu said he was in Edo State to inspect the facilities of the commission in preparation towards the coming election, especially the flood that wreaked havoc in the commission premises.

"We have been able to recover some vital materials. Whatever we may have lost and need to be replaced we will do so. We will ensure the staff welfare is not taken for granted. The voters' registration will continue, and it will not be affected by this flood incident".

He appealed to neighbouring states for financial support to assist the commission during the Edo election.

Earlier in his remarks, the state's INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha thanked the national chairman, Mammud Yakubu, for his swift response to the flood incident which make the commission to temporarily relocate to its Ikpoba Okha office.

He assured the chairman of the State office's determination to deliver on the mandate of the commission.

He said they were further encouraged by his visit as it would spur them to put many things in proper shape and called for more support from the national headquarters of the commission.
