NPFL: Mayhem in Port Harcourt as Rivers United fans beat up Akwa United supporter

There was a total breakdown of law and order at the Adokiya Amesiamaka stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday as fans of Rivers united fans went on a rampage, beating up a fan of Akwa United during a match between the two clubs.

Trouble started after the football fan raised a placard in support of his team.

The action was said to have angered the home fans who allegedly descended on the Akwa United fan.

Also, the centre referee who officiated the match was held hostage by the fans after the match which ended in a 1-1 draw.

It took the intervention of the Rivers state commissioner for sports, Boma Yaye for the centre referee to be escorted out of the stadium.

Fans were allowed in the stadium in contravention of COVID-19 protocols.
