The Kwara Commissioner of Police, Paul Odama, has pledged the Command’s commitment to support the 16th edition of the state Commissioner of Police Cup scheduled to hold in August.
Odama made this known on Friday in Ilorin while receiving the state Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) officials led by the Chairman, Ademola Kiyesola, in his office.
He noted that a date in August would be ideal for the tournament as political activities would have gone down a bit by then.
The commissioner, who assumed office in 2022, said he was already aware of the tournament and assured that all efforts would be made to ensure successful staging of the event which is a collaboration between Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria, Kwara chapter, and the state Police Command.
Earlier, the state Chairman of YSFON, Kiyesola said the visit was to officially welcome Odama to the state by YSFON and to intimate him on the upcoming tournament.
Kiyesola described the tournament as one of the biggest grassroots football competitions in the state as youth teams across the state look forward to it every year.
The chairman traced the history of Police Collaboration with YSFON to the time of former Inspector General Police, MD Abubakar in 2004, when he was the Commissioner of Police in the state.
The competition which started as Kwara CP U- 13 boys soccer tournament has now expanded three fold, the U- 13 boys, the U- 17 boys and U-17 girls in the last two editions.
