Sports Minister throws weight behind Okowa-led AFN board
Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare
Nigeria Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare has thrown his weight behind the newly elected Board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria led by Tonobok Okowa, declaring them as  the authentic Board empowered to govern the conduct of athletics in Nigeria.

Dare stated this after the inauguration of the Board in Abuja on Tuesday.

Dare stressed that the new board marks the dawn of a new era in Athletics in Nigeria and emphasized that the board is the only board recognised by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

He also added for the avoidance of doubt that no Sports Federation in Nigeria is autonomous.

“We begin today a new trajectory for Athletics seed development in our country and this new seed of hope will germinate from today to replace some of the badly sown seeds in the years gone by. You’re the legitimate governing body for the sports of track and field in Nigeria duly elected by the Congress of the AFN and recognised by the Federal Government of Nigeria. For the avoidance of doubt, no sports federation is autonomous", he said.

You may want to recall that another president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria in the person of Shehu Gusau emerged in a factional election held in Kebbi. That board is also claiming to be the authentic Board of the AFN.
