The National Universities Commission (NUC) has released a full list of all approved Federal, State, and Private Universities in Nigeria.
The development was a fufillment of the government commission's promise to keep Nigerians abreast of approved universities so that they do not fall for scammers and other unscrupulous elements.
The country has a number of illegal tertiary institutions swindling uninformed citizens with the claim of running accredited courses.
The list contained in the NUC's bulletin released on Monday, October 18 shows Nigeria currently has 45 federal universities, 54 state universities and 99 private universities, making a total of 198.

In another report, the NUC has released the list of federal, state and private universities that have the approval to operate post-graduate programmes, that is, Masters and PhD degrees. The list was published on the commission’s official website. The NUC expressed worry that some universities in the country are running unapproved postgraduate programmes.
It added that some institutes are awarding postgraduate degrees, either on their own or through unapproved affiliations with Nigerian and foreign Universities.
Similarly, the NUC has released the list of Nigerian universities that have the approval to operate distance learning centres.
The commission in a bulletin published on Monday, September 20, also stated that the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) which had 72 study/resource centres nationwide is currently the only approved open university in Nigeria.
There are about 12 universities that have the NUC’s approval to operate distance learning centres.
