Bandits adopt 200 students in Niger

Bandits have kidnapped about 200 students of Islamiyya School at Tegina in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, latest news report.

One person was shot dead while another was critically injured during the operation.

According to the state Police spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun the bandits were said to have struck the Salihu Tanko Islamic School at about 4:30pm on Sunday.

He said the abduction was carried out by "armed bandits on board motorcycles in their numbers" and while they were still trying to ascertain exact numbers, they believe around 200 children are missing.

All "tactical teams" have been mobilised to rescue the victims and the police will "ensure the children are rescued unhurt", he said.

Chief Press Secretary to the Niger state governor, Mary Noel Berje, also confirmed the abduction. "There was an abduction at an Islamic School in Tegina. But we are yet to ascertain the number of students abducted."

The state government has been making contact with all parents in the area to ascertain the exact number of children kidnapped.

Sunday's kidnap is the latest in a series of school children kidnap in the north west and north central regions of the country.
